artist, designer, educator, maker of things

“In all aspects of idea generation, and in the making of physical experiences and things, I am interested in the potential for opening doors through the quiet ritual of careful observation.”

Having trained and subsequently taught in several of the world’s top studio ateliers and schools of design, including the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy, the Grand Central Academy of Art in New York City, and the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), Brian’s paintings and drawings are sought after for their careful attention to detail, for their archival craft, and for their luminous, living presence. His work can be found in private and public collections across the United States and in Europe, including the Forbes Foundation and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and he has received numerous grants and awards, including the Darwin T. Turner Award for excellence in teaching and promoting inclusiveness in the classroom, a Mellon Grant Teaching Fellowship, a Vogelstein grant, a Stobart Foundation grant, the American Institute of Architect’s Henry Adams Award for excellence in architectural design, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art’s Mary Butler Trust Purchase Prize.

I am passionate about education and the importance of developing

fundamental design and observational drawing skills.

For over two decades, I have run high school summer design and drawing programs that immerse students in a wide range of foundational design and traditional drawing techniques, including figure drawing, master copies and cast drawing.

I organize and regularly participate in figure drawing sessions.

Drawing the human figure is a timeless, unique and transformative experience that challenges the fundamental preconceptions about how and what we see, and thus how go about our daily lives.

It is a place to practice core drawing skills, focus, have fun, and build community.
